The Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) requires all buildings to provide universal washrooms by 2025. What are Universal Washrooms?

Universal washrooms are required at specific intervals throughout public facilities. They are a lavatory fitted with a barrier-free toilet and sink. They should have sufficient space to allow all wheeled mobility devices, such as wheelchairs or powered chairs, free maneuverability into, around, and back out of the space. These specially designed washrooms provide a safe, private space for people with mobility considerations to take care of their needs with privacy and dignity.

They are fitted with an electronic lock that allows for emergency access from the outside should the occupant signal for help. A button labeled as emergency assistance sits within easy reach so an occupant can call for help. This button will unlock the door and sound a siren to indicate an emergency within.

Functionality of a Universal Washroom

Universal washrooms are designed with ease of mobility and access in mind. When the door fully closes, the person who has entered can activate a “Push to Lock” button to secure the door and disengage the outside door operation switch. To exit the room and reset the system, the user can open the door with the handle, or utilize the inside door operation switch.

Illuminated indicators on both sides of the door can be installed to designate that the washroom is in use. In the event of an emergency, employees or staff can also open the door with a mechanical key.
